The New England Revolution today announced the team has traded the rights to Fred, acquired in the 2010 postseason Re-Entry Draft process, to D.C. for United\u2019s natural second round selection in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. Fred was previously with D.C. United from 2007 to 2009 before being traded to the Philadelphia Union prior to the 2010 season.<\/p>\n
Fred, who was initially expected to sign outside the league, has now signed a deal with D.C. and will return to MLS. Interestingly, D.C. could have selected Fred\u2019s rights in the second round of the 2010 Re-Entry Draft, but opted to not use their pick, allowing the Revs to select him and subsequently forcing them to trade for his rights when the team wished to acquire him.<\/p>\n
Fred, who is capable of playing on the left and right sides of midfield, most recently with the Philadelphia Union, won the Supporters\u2019 Shield in 2007 and the U.S. Open Cup in 2008 with D.C. United. He has 15 goals and 17 assists in 97 MLS appearances, including four goals and an assist in 25 games (24 starts) last season.<\/p>\n
Prior to joining MLS, Fred won the Australian A-League championship with the Melbourne Victory, while leading the league with nine assists. Fred had previously played for Brazilian clubs Tupi, Am\u00e9rica and Guarani.
