He was 26.<\/p>\n<p>According to police report, Gomes was driving in the wrong direction on I-95 near Point Street at about 4:30am before his car collided with another vehicle. A third vehicle was also involved. Gomes was pronounced dead at the scene while a second person had to be extricated from another vehicle, and is listed in serious, but stable condition. A third person escaped without serious injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Gomes, a resident of North Providence, R.I., was one of the attacking catalysts of the dominant East Providence Sports squads that won numerous accolades in recent years. His golden boot-winning 2010 season helped the club claim the LUSA league championship. In 2012, his attacking prowess allowed the club to win both the LUSA Cup and Super Cup tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>Following the 2012 season, the squad reached the State Final of the U.S. Open Cup tournament, a game in which Gomes and his East Providence teammates fell short when the game went to penalties.<\/p>\n<p>Gomes joined the NPSL&#8217;s Rhode Island Reds in 2013.
