“It’s behind us,\u201d said Revolution midfielder Pat Phelan in reference to the last week\u2019s loss. \u201cWe’ve got an opportunity to get some hardware and get something out of the season, so our focus is on that.”<\/p>\n
And with good reason. The 2010 MLS season has not been especially kind to the Local XI. Sporting a\u00a0disappointing 6-12-3 league record going into September, the ragged Revolution hope to\u00a0engineer an unforgettable moment\u00a0in the midst of a forgettable season.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have to get the victory at home and win the final,\u201d said Revolution captain Shalrie Joseph. \u201cWe need to start feeling good about ourselves again.\u201d<\/p>\n
Although there’s been little to feel good about\u00a0\u00a0the Revs’ performances in league play, SuperLiga has been nothing short of a blessing to the Revolution this year. During this year\u2019s tournament, the Revs\u2019 defense only allowed two goals in four games and is showing the swagger of a winning side.<\/p>\n
More importantly, they won all four, which certainly gave them confidence in league play, as they went a combined 7-0-1 between July 10th<\/sup> and August 14th<\/sup> in all competitions. Suffice to say, SuperLiga has been the elixir that has cured what ails this side.<\/p>\n Then, of course, there\u2019s the not-so-small matter that the Revs are the only MLS club to claim a SuperLiga trophy, whic<\/em>h they won in 2008. A repeat would be a\u00a0monumental\u00a0achievement\u00a0for a team that has found very\u00a0little to be proud\u00a0of this season.<\/p>\n \u201cTo be able to do that again would speak volumes,\u201d said Phelan. \u201cEspecially with the kind of season we\u2019ve had in MLS. It hasn\u2019t been too kind to us and this could be huge for our season.\u201d<\/p>\n Indeed, any accolades the Revolution can acquire this season would certainly ease the sting of a season hampered by injuries, suspensions, and ejections. And the players know it.<\/p>\n \u201c<\/em>We want to\u00a0win something,\u201d said Joseph. \u201cIf not the MLS Cup, then the SuperLiga Final.\u201d<\/p>\n Not that it will be easy. Although the Revolution already beat Monarcas Morelia\u00a01-0 back on July 20th <\/sup>during SuperLiga group play, the\u00a0Mexican side will likely return to\u00a0Gillette Stadium\u00a0in far better form now that the Mexican Primeria Division is full swing.<\/p>\n \u201cWe gotta bring it all, especially against a team like Morelia,\u201d said Joseph. \u201cThey look like they’ve been playing well from what I’ve seen. They’re going to be sharp, and we\u2019re going to have to pick up our intensity and be ready to play.\u201d<\/p>\n There\u2019s little doubt that these players believe they can do it. With \u201cwin\u201d and \u201cWednesday\u201d\u00a0liberally sprinkled\u00a0into the locker room conversations this week, the focus is clear: just win, baby. Win it for your teammates. Win it yourselves.
