E.P. Routs Lusitana 7-1

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Armando Gomes and Kyle Teixeira scored two goals apiece in E.P. Sports’ 7-1 rout over Lusitana Sports (Cumberland, R.I.) Sunday at Riverside Recreation Park.

Gomes’ goals came in the 12th and 51st minutes while Teixeira found his in the 45th and 62nd minute. Jimmy Hernandez (66′), Tristan Lewis (74′) and Jason Couto (89′) all tallied as well for East Providence. Lustiana found its only goal from Ivan Boaventura in the first minute.

Lusitana midfielder Paulo Rodrigues’ red card in the 45th minute left his squad shorthanded for the entirety of the second half.

The win kept East Providence in first place, with a 6-1-0 (18 points) record in LUSA. Lusitana’s record dropped to 2-3-1 (7 points).

Although the hosts dominated the match, the opening minute belonged to the guests. With Lusitana on the counterattack, Adilson Alves slotted inside for Boaventura, who beat Jimmi Underhill for the wake up goal.

The Lusitana lead didn’t last long, though. In the 12th minute, Ruben Resendes crossed it from the left into the area where Gomes tapped it through for the equalizer.

With the game knotted at one as stoppage time approached, Rodrigues, who was already carrying a caution he received in the 7th minute, picked up his second yellow and subsequent red card for another foul in front the area. Moments later, Teixeira curled the free kick into the upper 90 for the go-ahead in the 45th minute.

East Providence showed no mercy against the 10-man Lusitana in the second half. Six minutes into the frame, Gomes grabbed the ball away from a Lusitana defender and slotted it past a helpless Arsenio Godinho to double the lead.

Teixeira returned to the scoresheet in the 62nd when he beat two defenders and buried it to open the gap to three.

In the 66th minute, Hernandez followed up with a strike of his own. Lewis went down the right and fed it to Hernandez inside the area and pushed it through.

Eight minutes later, Hernandez returned the favor to Lewis. After Godinho struggled to punch away a Chris Cunha cross, Hernandez collected it, then slid a short pass to Lewis, who’s light-touch allowed the ball to crawl into the net in the 74th minute.

Couto capped the scoring in the penultimate minute when he headed a Joaquim DePina pass into the back of the net for East Providence’s seventh goal of the game.

East Providence returns to action on Jun. 10 against Lincoln Sports at Gutierras School Field in Bristol, R.I.

I played about 15 years in the Connecticut league during which time we[ New Haven City] had a great cup win v s Ludlow Lusitano when a bunch of Boston Astros, including Boom Boom Barbosa, were recruited to play for them. We won on penalties.
