Azul Defeat Voltage in Season Finale

Connecticut FC Azul finished their inaugural PDL season in fourth place of the Northeast Division after defeating the Vermont Voltage, 4-2, at Collins-Perley Sports Complex in St. Albans, VT., in front of a reported 325 on Saturday night.

Paul Templeton, Justin Brewer and Ryan Kinne all scored for CFC (6-5-5, 23 points) in the win. Liam Gilbert and Fabricio Barancoski hit the back of the net in a losing effort for the Voltage (3-11-2, 11 points), who finished in seventh in the Northeast Division.

“(Connecticut) were the better team tonight,” said Vuckovic, Vermont’s owner/general manager/director of marketing/striker, in a club release. “They controlled 70% of the possession and were able to create opportunities from that. We also had a turnover in the back that didn’t help out as it led to one of their goals.”

The Voltage opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Barancoski, who dribbled around Connecticut goalkeeper Matthew Sangeloty to give himself an easy finish. The goal was Barancoski’s second of the season.

Brewer tied the game seven minutes later, intercepting a pass and dribbling around Vermont’s Amir Pasic before slotting it into the empty net for his fourth goal of the year. Connecticut and Vermont would enter halftime knotted at 1-1.

Templeton would put the visitors in the lead for good in the 52nd minute, heading in a cross from Alvi Fokou. Either Templeton or Brewer would add another nine minutes later to make it 3-1, with CFC and Vermont each listed a different player as the scorer.

Liam Gilbert would pull one back in the 65th minute with a shot from outside the box with his second goal of the season.

That was the closest the Voltage would get as former New England Revolution striker Ryan Kinne would clinch the win for Azul with a 92nd minute strike, his eighth goal of the season.

Azul outshot the Voltage 14 to 10 in the win.

Though both club’s PDL schedules are over, the Voltage are scheduled to play the GPS Portland Phoenix on Wednesday, July 18, at Lyndon State College.
