Bengtson Scores In Honduras Win

New England Revolution striker Jerry Bengtson and Honduras kept their World Cup hopes alive with an important 3-0 victory over Cuba at Estadio Pedro Marrero in Havana on Friday night.

Bengtson played the full 90 minutes in the match and scored the eventual game-winner in the 32nd minute. Bengtson’s goal came off a left footed volley from just outside the 6-yard box after Georgie Welcome headed a cross from Emilio Izaguirre into his path. The goal ended a 239-minute goalless streak for Hondurras.

“I didn’t expect us to win by three goals,” Bengtson told the media after the match. “It was a real blessing for me to score on my return to the national side. We’re back in the hunt now and full of confidence in our qualifying chances.”

The other goal scorers in the match were defender Víctor Bernárdez (62nd minute) and midfielder Marvin Chavez (92nd), who both play for the San Jose Earthquakes.

The win leaves Honduras (1-1-1, 4 points) in third place in Group C of COCACAF World Cup Qualifying. The top team teams advance and Honduras sits two points behind second place Panama (2-0-1, 6 points) and three points behind first place Canada (2-0-1, 7 points).

Honduras is hoping to qualify for their second straight World Cup.

Honduras faces Cuba (0-3-0, 0 points) again on Tuesday, this time at home at Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula in Honduras.

Bengtson has two goals in seven MLS games (four starts) since joining the Revolution
