On Monday, the New England Revolution announced that it has signed its first-ever Homegrown Player with the addition of midfielder/forward Diego Fagundez.

“We’re pleased to sign Diego from our youth program,” said Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns in a press release. “We believe Diego has great potential and we want to ensure he continues to develop and mature in the Revolution’s system. We look forward to seeing him grow and eventually make an impact on the first team.”

The 15-year-old native of Leominster, MA by way of Montevideo, Uruguay, played in 30 games (starting 24) for the Revolution U-16s and tied for the team goalscoring lead (along with Felix Debona) with 20 goals during the 2009-10 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season, and earned U.S. Soccer Development Academy National Starting XI honors. He was also called into camp with the U.S. Boys Under-15 squad in 2010.

Interestingly, he picked up the club’s lone red card ejection on April 24, 2010 against his former club – FC Greater Boston U-15/16 – in a 4-3 victory at Gillette Stadium.

Fagundez is the youngest player in MLS history since Freddy Adu signed with DC United as a 14-year-old in 2004.
