Former New England Revolution star, Jose “Pepe” Cancela may have turned 36 over the summer, but his offensive exploits have shown no signs of slowing down.

The attacking midfielder, who earned a spot on New England Soccer Today’s Revolution All-Time Best XI two years ago, has scored five goals so far this year — good enough for 9th in Costa Rica’s Primera División – in addition to five assists for his new club Deportivo Saprissa, despite playing just ten of 15 games due to injury. Cancela was also among the top 10 scorers in Costa Rica last season.

Cancela’s best goal this season came on Sunday with a 39th minute stunning volley from 30 yards out to open the scoring in a crucial 2-1 victory over Puntarenas that saw Saprissa (8-4-3, 27 points) move into second place in the Primera División, one point behind leaders Deportiva Alajuelense.

Cancela, a Uruguay native, had 27 assists and six goals in 84 regular season games from 2003-06 for the Revolution.

Here’s Cancela’s goal from Sunday, which was ranked number three on ESPN International’s Top 10 plays from around the world:
