PDL: Pioneers Pummel Portland 4-1

Javoni Simms scored for the second game in a row to help the Western Mass Pioneers overtake the GPS Portland Phoenix 4-1 at Lusitano Stadium on Friday.

Simms opened the account in the 31st minute, while Kevin Zapata found the back of the net in the 49th minute. Pierre Omango brought one back for the guests in the 53rd minute, but the Pioneers padded their lead with goals from Drou Goff and Tommaso D’Agostino shortly after Omango’s strike.

The Western Mass win brings their record to 1-0-1 (4 points), while the Portland drops to 1-1-1 (4 points). The two clubs are in the midst of a three-way tie for first place in the Northeast Division, along with CFC Azul.

The Pioneers return to the pitch on Saturday, when they travel to Algonquin College Soccer Complex, where they’ll face the Ottawa Fury at 7pm. The Phoenix will look to regroup on Saturday at Deering High School, where the Seacoast United Phantoms will host them at 6pm.
