Breakers Blasted by Sky Blue

On Saturday, Sky Blue FC (7-1-1, 22 points) showed just how good they are by beating the Boston Breakers (3-2-2-, 11 points) 5-1 at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J.

It was the first time ever that the Breakers allowed five goals in a game and just their second loss of the season.

“We just didn’t play well, and Sky Blue was very good,” Breakers Head Coach Lisa Cole said in a team release. “They took all their chances very well.

The Breakers were without starters Sydney LeRoux and Heather O’Reilly, who were away with the US national team. But the Breakers offense, which entered the game with one of the league’s strongest scoring records, couldn’t solve a resolute Sky Blue back line that was without captain Christie Rampone, who was also away with the national team.

Without two of their best attacking players, the Breakers were essentially reduced to spectators as Sky Blue raced out to a three goal lead inside of 20 minutes.

Danesha Adams scored for Sky Blue in the 7th minute, finishing off a feed from Lisa De Vanna inside the penalty area and beating Breakers goal keeper Ashley Phillips at the near post.

De Vanna scored a goal of her own in the 14th minute, a bicycle kick finish to double Sky Blue’s lead for her fourth goal of the season. Midfielder Katy Freels chipped the ball to De Vanna, who unloaded the blockbuster finish past Phillips.

Three minutes later, Taylor Lytle made a run through the midfield and played Monica Ocampo on the flank. Ocampo then found Freels in the middle of the field, who played Lytle in behind. Lytle then beat Phillips with a one-time finish into the back of the net.

A shell-shocked Breakers side looked high and low for a response, but came up with very little. After the interval, Sky Blue would tack on a fourth goal in the 56th minute. Sky Blue goal keeper Brittany Cameron sent a goal kick down field and connected with De Vanna, who flicked the ball into the goal with her head for her second goal of the game.

Kyah Simon grabbed a consolation goal for the Breakers in the 74th minute. Lianne Sanderson hit a shot from the center of the penalty area off the crossbar, the rebound falling to an open Simon who poked the loose ball into the goal for Boston’s lone score of the game.

Sky Blue wasn’t done, however, as the Breakers surrendered their fifth goal via penalty shot in the 84th minute. Nayeli Rangel was taken down the in the penalty area and Adams converted the ensuing spot kick, going left to beat Phillips for her second goal of the game.

The Breakers managed one last chance to chip away at the Sky Blue advantage when Simon drew the foul inside the 18 during stoppage time. Sanderson stepped up to take the penalty, but substitute keeper Ashley Baker parried away the shot to add further insult to the Breakers’ predicament.

Boston will look to reclaim their form on Wednesday when they host the  Western New York Flash at Dilboy Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7pm.
