Severe thunderstorms that produced dangerous lightning near Durwood Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. on Wednesday forced the Boston Breakers to stomach a 2-1 weather-shortened loss to FC Kansas City.

Former Breakers’ first round pick Amy Rodriguez opened the scoring to put the hosts ahead early, but Heather O’Reilly responded minutes later. Sarah Hagen helped the Blues regain the lead going into halftime, at which point the match was canceled due to lightning.

Severe weather also delayed the start of the match for two hours. But once conditions cleared – albeit briefly – Rodriguez made her mark in the openining minutes after beating keeper Alyssa Naeher in a one-on-one situation.

O’Reilly responded from the penalty spot not long after in the wake of a foul called against the hosts inside their own area.

But the Blues had the final say before the weather turned for the worse when Hagen tallied before the half to give the hosts the victory.

The Breakers return to action on Sunday when they host the Portland Thorns at Harvard Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30pm.
