Sporting CP Update: 3/23

SCP1

The Leoes returned to league action on Sunday versus Guimaraes. After winning their last two league games in unconvincing manner, Sporting would need to put together a good performance against Guimaraes, who sit 5th in the standings. And just exactly what the doctor ordered. A 83rd minute goal from Guimaraes’ Kanu would be the only damper in this game, ruining what could of been a clean sheet win for Sporting. 4-1 was your final score.

Sporting didn’t exactly overwhelm Guimaraes, but were nearly 100 percent accurate with their shots on target. Sporting were up 3-0 at halftime with goals from Joao Mario, Adrien, and Slimani. Nani added a fourth goal by converting the second penalty of the game, with Adrien converting the first.

The “B” team won both league games this week. First up was Oliveirense, who they beat 2-1. Diego Rubio scored again, continuing his hot streak. Then on Sunday they beat Atletico 2-0. No Diego for this game, but Cristian Ponde scored both goals for the “B” side.

With both wins the “B” team is now in a three-team tie for the second spot in the Second Division, along with Benfica’s “B” team and Tondela. However, the rules state “B” team sides cannot get promoted, so no we won’t see the “B” sides in top flight if they finish inside of the top two.

No games this week due to Portuguese National Team action vs Serbia (Mar. 29 – Euro qualifying) and Cape Verde  (Mar. 31 – international friendly). The next game for the Leoes will be Apr. 4 versus Pacos de Ferreira.
