Sporting CP Update 4/20

SCP1

Even before Sporting stepped on the pitch to play Boavista on Sunday, fortune was already smiling on the Leoes after Braga lost their match to regional rivals Guimaraes. That loss, combined with a Sporting win, would put their lead over Braga for third place at 10 points.

It would only take Sporting fifteen seconds to score their first goal against Boavista. That lead, though, wouldn’t last long as Boavista would tie the game in the seventh minute from the head of Ze Manuel. Just before halftime, Sporting’s Tobias Figueiredo was sent off for taking down a player on a break away.

Despite being down to 10 men, Sporting prevailed when Islam Slimani corralled a pass from Andre Carrillo and scored the game-winner. With four weeks left in the season, and a comfortable third-place cushion, a win next Monday at Moreirense would guarantee a Champions League playoff spot.

The “B” team played twice over the past week. First match was a come-from-behind 2-2 draw against Feirense, a game in which they rallied from a two-goal deficit. Nuno Reis and Daniel Podence provided the goals.

Their second match of the week was against Uniao de Madeira, a game in which Gelson Martins scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Uniao.
