Sporting CP Update 5/4

After smashing Moreirense last Monday 4-1 thanks to the two-goal, two-assist effort from former Seattle Sounder Fredy Montero Sporting were home to Nacional da Madeira on Saturday.

Last week, Sporting manager Marco Silva went with two strikers in a 4-4-2 instead of the typical 4-5-1 formation, with Montero and Junya Tanaka as the forward pairings. With third place locked up, other players got a chance to start, including former Sporting Kansas City midfielder Oriol Rosell, youngster Carlos Mane in favor of regulars like Nani, William Carvalho, and Andre Carrillo, all resting for the Portuguese Cup finals against Braga on May 31.

Montero was the hero again on Saturday. His hot form continued as he scored two more goals against Nacional in a 2-0 win with three games left in the Portuguese Liga season.

The “B” team were action on Sunday. They played FC Porto “B”. Sporting “B” team won the game 1-0, with Wallyson, a prospect who will most likely be on the main squad next season, scoring the lone goal. Matheus Pereira, also a prospect for the main squad next, was voted man of the match.
