Reigning PDL Northeast Division champion Seacoast United Phantoms advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open Cup tournament after beating GPS Massachusetts 2-1 in Cambridge, Mass. on Wednesday.

GPS fired the opening salvo when Roy Sanderman scored from a corner in the 17th minute. The situation for Seacoast seemed to get worse when Terrance Carter picked up a second caution and ejection in the 68th minute. But the shorthanded Phantoms returned fire in the form of goals from Anthony Grant and Sofiane Tergou in the 70th and 88th minutes to seal the win.

The Phantoms will face the Tulsa Roughnecks on May 20 in Tulsa, Okla.

Down in Danbury, Ct., AC Connecticut’s hopes of reaching the second round were dashed by a potent Virginia Beach City FC, which claimed a 3-2 win on Wednesday.

Geoffrey Hill put the guests on the board in the seventh minute, but the hosts responded on a 34th minute goal from Raphael Carvalho. Zach Zurita’s 68th minute strike gave Connecticut the lead, but Virginia Beach City prevailed late on goals from Tyler Cyrus and Pat Thomas in the 71st and 88th minutes, respectively.

Virginia Beach City will face the Richmond Kickers on May 20 in Richmond, Va.
