Portugal-Greece Euro Rematch in Lawrence Cancelled

POR-GRE

The much-anticipated Legends Cup exhibition match, which was set to bring a number of notable players from the 2004 Euro final between Portugal and Greece to Veterans Stadium in Lawrence, Mass. on Friday, has been cancelled.

Etix.com, the event’s official ticket agency, sent out an e-mail to ticket holders on Thursday advising that the match had been cancelled due to “schedule conflicts and travel arrangements.” The agency advised that full refunds will be issued.

The match was originally set to feature Portugal’s Nuno Gomes, Maniche, Fernando Couto, Rui Barros, Simao and Costinha along with Greece’s Angelos Charisteas, Angelos Basinas, Giourkas Seitardis and Dimitrios Papadopoulo. Charisteas scored the decider in the 2004 Final, which Greece won 1-0 at Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.

According to the original press announcement, the Portuguese players were “not calling this a friendly” and were “traveling to Lawrence to win.”

Now that the rematch is off, supporters of both squads are left to wonder how it would have played out.
