The magic has ended for the Charlotte Independence in their quest for further U.S. Open Cup glory.

Less than two weeks after eliminating the Revolution in the fourth round of the tournament, the USL side fell 3-1 to the Chicago Fire in Tuesday’s Round of 16 match at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill.

Despite getting an early goal from Tomasz Zahorski in the sixth minute, the Fire replied with a trio of goals from Mike Magee (38th minute), Lovel Palmer (50th minute) and Patrick Nyarko (82nd minute).

The loss put an end to a dramatic tournament run by the upstart USL side that also included a third round upset of the NASL’s Carolina RailHawks.

Former Revolution players Bilal Duckett and Paolo DelPiccolo both started for the Independence.

The Fire will play Orlando City SC in the tournament quarterfinals on either Jul. 21 or 22.
