Attleboro, Mass. native Geoff Cameron scored early, but Paul Aguilar’s late-game heroics allowed Mexico to prevail in extra time, giving them a 3-2 win in Saturday’s CONCACAF Cup at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

After both sides traded goals in extra time, Aguilar hit a brilliant volley in the 118th minute to send Mexico to the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.

Cameron scribbled his name on the scoresheet in the 15th minute by heading through a Michael Bradley free kick from the left edge. The Stoke City defender’s strike canceled out an early Mexico lead acquired in the 10th minute by Javier Hernandez, who converted a pass from Oribe Peralta after he draw Brad Guzan out of the box before the score.

After neither side was able to convert again before full time, Peralta put Mexico ahead in the 96th minute. Down, but not out, the U.S. leveled it in the 108th minute when DeAndre Yedlin put a ball into the box that Bobby Wood ran onto and scored to put the match back on level terms before Aguilar’s winner.

Revolution midfielder Jermaine Jones briefly left the match near the hour mark after clashing heads with Aguilar. Jones quickly returned after he was attended to by a team doctor, and went on to play the full 120 minutes.

Mexico uncovered a handful opportunities to put the match away before full time. One of their best chances came in the 59th minute when Hernandez grabbed a ball in front of the box from Raul Jimenez, but was unable to finish.

Mexico made a shout for a penalty in the 93rd minute after Matt Besler’s arm caught a piece of an attempted cross from Diego Reyes inside the area, but El Tri‘s pleadings for a shot from the spot went unheard.

Saturday’s match marked only the third time the regional rivals had gone to extra time.
