State of the Roster

With the season officially over for the Revolution, let’s take a look at the current roster, and where each player presumably stands going into the offseason, along with their salary for 2015.

A couple of things to note: Since the league and its clubs do not release information on the length of player deals, we offered best guesses in situations where the number of years were not previously reported by outside sources, or disclosed by direct sources (players, executives, etc.). Additionally, nearly all MLS contracts contain club options at the end of each year. Hence, when a player signs a three-year contract, it’s actually a series of three, one-year deals.

Juan Agudelo ($426,500): Signed a deal with team during offseason that’ll keep him in New England through 2018, according to an ESPN.com report last winter. Told media that he will remain in the area during the offseason. Key stats: 32 games, 7 goals, 3 assists. Outlook: Likely to return.

Kevin Alston ($158,333): Re-signed with team last offseason, with club presumably holding an option for 2016. Key stat: Played in 16 games splitting time between left and right back. Outlook: Likely to return.

Darrius Barnes ($101,666) : Re-signed with team last offseason, with club presumably holding an option for 2016. Told media on Friday he thinks he’ll be back. Key stats: Played in five of club’s first six games before knee injury ended his season. Outlook: Likely to return.

Teal Bunbury ($240,000): Re-signed with the last offseason, with club presumably holding an option for 2016. Spoke with media on Friday about returning next year. Key stats: 30 games, 4 goals, 5 assists. Outlook: Likely to return.

Scott Caldwell ($67,500): Signed Homegrown Player contract prior to 2013 season, with club presumably holding the final option of that deal going into 2016. Key stat: Only player on roster to play in all 34 regular season games; voted as team’s MVP. Outlook: Likely to return.

Charlie Davies ($82,759): Signed with team prior to 2014 season following loan spell, with club presumably holding an option for 2016.  Told media he’s looking forward to helping  the team 2016. Key stat: Led team in scoring (10) while missing only one game. Outlook: Likely to return.

Andy Dorman ($145,000): Signed with team prior to 2013 season. Unknown if club has one more option to exercise. If so, club unlikely to pick it up given Dorman’s salary in comparison to 2015 contributions. Key stats: Played in 18 games, but only garnered a combined 12 minutes of action in last eight games of the season. Outlook: Unlikely to return.

Diego Fagundez ($152,200): Re-signed with team midway through 2013 season, with club holding at least one more option going into 2016. Key stats: 30 games, 6 goals, 4 assists. Outlook: Likely to return.

Andrew Farrell ($198,500): Generation adidas player out of college, presumably entering final year of that contract in 2016. Key stat: Played in 32 games while making the switch to center back on a full-time basis; nominee for MLS Player of the Month for the month of April, and won team’s defender of the year award. Outlook: Likely to return.

Jose Goncalves ($479,375): Club exercised purchase clause on loan deal from FC Scion following 2013 season. At the time of the transaction, Revolution GM Michael Burns said the purchase option would keep Goncalves in town for “multiple years.” Goncalves told media on Friday that he has a decision to make whether he’ll be back in 2016. Key stat: Played in 29 games, donned the captain’s armband before it was transferred to Jones in April. Outlook: Uncertain.

Jeremy Hall ($70,000): Acquired via trade from Toronto last offseason. Unknown whether club has an option going into 2016. Key stat: Started nine of 10 games down the stretch before London Woodberry took the starting right back’s role for the final two games of the season. Outlook: Likely to return

Zachary Herivaux ($60,000): Signed Homegrown Player contract in May. Club will almost certainly pick up first option going into 2016. Key stat: Only saw action in the U.S. Open Cup loss to Charlotte. Outlook: Likely to return.

Jermaine Jones ($3,052,500): Contract expires this offseason. Told media on Friday he has offers from other clubs in MLS, Europe and Brazil. Key stat: Missed 13 games due to separate sports hernia surgeries, but took over captaincy mid-way through spring. Did not record a goal or assist in 2015. Outlook: Unlikely to return.

Brad Knighton ($82,005): Re-signed with club during last offseason, with club presumably holding an option for 2016. Key stat: Started three games in place of Bobby Shuttleworth. Outlook: Likely to return.

Daigo Kobayashi ($146,666): Acquired via trade from Vancouver prior to 2014, with club presumably holding an option for 2016. Key stat: Played in 21 games, collected 2 assists, saw bulk of action while Jones was recovering from first surgery. Outlook: Uncertain.

Timi Mulgrew ($50,000): Signed first-year deal prior to start of 2015 season, with club holding at least two more options. Key stats: Earned three starts in 15 games at Rochester. Outlook: Unlikely to return.

Steve Neumann ($92,750): Signed first-year deal prior to start of 2014 season, with club holding presumably an option for 2016. Key stats: Earned only one start in nine games. Outlook: Likely to return.

Lee Nguyen ($193,750): Re-signed with club prior to 2014 season, with club holding options for 2016 and 2017. Key stats: Led team in assists (10), and tied for 2nd in goals (7). Outlook: Likely to return.

Sean Okoli ($50,000): Acquired via trade with Seattle during 2015 MLS SuperDraft, and signed a new deal with club during offseason. Club presumably holds at least two more options. Key stat: Saw a combined 46 minutes worth of action across five substitute appearances. Outlook: Unlikely to return.

Kelyn Rowe ($221,000): Completed final year of original Generation adidas deal in 2015. Presumably heading into offseason out of contract. Key stats: Scored seven goals and added six assists in 33 games. Outlook: Likely to return.

Tyler Rudy ($50,000): Signed first-year deal prior to 2015 season, with club holding at least two more options. Key stat: Collected two assists in 14 games at Rochester before an ankle injury cut his season short. Outlook: Unlikely to return.

Donnie Smith ($60,000): Re-signed with club prior to start of the season, marking second-straight year in which he re-joined the club after being waived. Club presumably holding at least two more options. Key stat: Only saw action in U.S. Open Cup loss to Charlotte, and out of position (CB), at that. Outlook: Unlikely to return.

Bobby Shuttleworth ($111,250): Re-signed with club during summer, and club presumably holds at least two more options. Key stat: Played in 31 games while recording eight clean sheets. Outlook: Likely to return.

Trevor Spangenberg ($50,000): Signed with club prior to the start of the season. Club presumably holds at least two more options. Key stat: Did not make a first team appearance; went to Richmond for a pair of loan spells during the spring. Outlook: Unlikely to return.

Chris Tierney ($113,333): Re-signed with club mid-way through 2013 season, with club likely exercising the final option of that deal going into 2016. Key stats: Club’s only nominee to the MLS All-Star Game, and the first since 2011. Outlook: Likely to return.

London Woodberry ($60,000): Signed prior to 2015 season. Club presumably holds at least two more options. Key stat: Started 18 games at right back, collecting a pair of assists. Outlook: Likely to return.

I might be wrong about this, but I seem to remember that JoGo’s contract was up after this year. If that’s the case, I’d say he’s good as gone. The Revs might be able to survive losing either Jones or Goncalves, but not both.

And they need to bring Kobayashi back, He’s not expensive and is a key contributor. The Revs are abysmal at bringing in new (non-draft) players, so I doubt they will be able to replace Daigo in addition to the positions where they NEED to bring new guys in.

What about Nguyen’s contract dispute earlier in the season? Any significant chance he holds out or demands a trade unless he gets a new agreement?

Tony, I think he’ll continue to ask for a new deal during the offseason. Whether he decides to hold out will be interesting to see, as his last holdout didn’t exactly work in his favor.

I agree with the vast majority, though to nitpick, I would say Rowe is uncertain to return and Shuttleworth is almost certain to be back.

Also, I’m not sure about the contract situations of Dorman and Tierney, but I think it’s important to note that they could be MLS free agency under the new rules if their contracts are up and if my math/understanding is correct. This could be very important especially regarding Tierney.

Chris, I wouldn’t say Rowe is a lock to be back, but from what I gather, the organization and coaching staff is really high on keeping Rowe in town. I think they’ll make every effort to keep him here.

I’m not sure if Dorman is eligible for free agency since I believe he only has seven years of MLS service time (2004-07, 2013-15). Even so, I can’t see him coming back unless he’s willing to take a significant cut in salary. The only situation I think he comes back is if both Jones and Kobayashi leave, and Dorman takes a paycut.

As for Tierney – I could be very wrong, but I get the sense that he wants to play his entire career here. But it will be interesting to see if he does test the waters since he just completed his eighth year, which would make him eligible for free agency if his current deal expires this winter.

I think Dorman is done for sure but I’m not so high on Kevin Alston. I have a feeling KA has played his last game in a Revs jersey. I’m also high on Okoli coming back, he’s pretty decent for his age, has size, I like him, think they do as well. JJ wont get many 3 year offers I hope. Lastly I believe the new CBA limits options in contracts to 3 or less years, no more. Not sure if we had anyone on a 4 year deal or not.

I am surprised at the low salaries given to Davies, Tierney, Shuttleworth , Nguyen, and especially Caldwell relative to other players. I feel that, somehow, this situation would hurt the Revs . These are top and experienced performers who are underpaid by quite a bit.

Not that familiar with the ways of the Kraft’s, eh? 🙂

My mind is absolutely blown that players like Scott Caldwell and Bobby Shuttleworth make far less then players that barely see playing time! I can’t wrap my head around how these two players aren’t making far more since they are two of our clutch players who barely missed any playing time this year and truly impacted how our season went! SO ridiculous!

Minutemanii, no question the Revs need new ownership, if only because the Krafts’ overwhelming interest is with the Patriots. If you read Jim Dow’s article of about a half year ago concerning the Sounders you will see that their operation is about twice the size of the Rev’s ,and I bet that this advantage includes the scouting staff, in my opinion an all important factor in team development. If you include the baffling Rev salary discrepancies one really wonders how they compete as well as they do.
