UWS: Mutiny Blast Lady Lancers in Opener
- Updated: May 15, 2017
The New England Mutiny showed no inclination of starting their season quietly in Sunday’s 5-1 rout of the Rochester Lady Lancers at East Longmeadow High School in East Longmeadow, Mass.
Julia Carr kicked off the scoring in the fifth minute with a 30-yard rocket while veteran forward Kate Howarth scored in the ninth and 11th minutes to put the hosts ahead by a massive margin early. Riley Houle joined the party in the 18th minute while Abby Sotomayor, who assisted on both of Howarth’s goals, capped the scoring the 32nd minute.
Ally Sharpe tallied Rochester’s lone goal in the 68th minute.
“Kate and Abby from last year carried a great bond and a great chemistry over to this year,” Mutiny coach Joe Abele told the media after the match. “With them on the field, the whole team in general has a great chemistry… even though they were successful, I want to say the whole team was successful because they all fed off each other and propelled each other forward.”
The Mutiny outshot their foes 15-3 as Lady Lancers keeper Caitie Broderick was forced to make five saves during Saturday’s season opener, which marked the first time New England had faced UWS newcomer Rochester.
“We came into today’s game not knowing what to expect,” said Abele. “So, we were just working on team chemistry and we worked on our game today.”
The Mutiny will return to action on Saturday against the Lancaster Inferno. Kickoff is 7:00pm.
