Player Ratings: New England Revolution vs. Philadelphia Union

After each match the contributors to New England Soccer Today will rate the performances of the New England Revolution players who made an appearance on a 1 to 10 scale (1 horrendous, 5 average, 10 perfection). This week Sean Donahue and Brian O’Connell contributed ratings for the Revs 3-0 home loss to the Philadelphia Union.

Matt Reis – Average Rating: 3.75 (Brian 3.5, Sean 4)
In the absence of Joseph, the veteran fails to fire up his teammates. Play on the pitch not much better; poor communication with his defenders didn’t aid the Revs either. (Brian) … As the captain and goalkeeper, Reis needs to take charge of the defense, especially on set pieces. Left out to dry on the goals, but expect more in the areas of leadership and distribution. (Sean)

Chris Tierney – Average Rating: 4 (Brian 4, Sean 4)
Rarely tested at left back, but gave the Revs their best opportunity to crack the cleansheet his shot off the post in the 50th minute. (Brian) … Even Tierney’s service didn’t seem to be up to par Sunday. Hit the post from a tough angle with his one chance, but might have been better off delivering a cross. (Sean)

Franco Coria – Average Rating: 3.5 (Brian 3.5, Sean 3.5)
Plagued by poor positioning on the first goal, and never seemed to gel with Soares. (Brian) … The positioning and communication between the center backs left holes in the defense all night. Coria may have been hurt by his lack of playing time lately. Subbed out in the 45th minute. More consistency in the backline is needed.  (Sean)

A.J. Soares – Average Rating: 3.75 (Brian 4, Sean 3.5)
Should’ve given it a go after Mondragon’s collision with Feilhaber; otherwise, it was a forgettable performance. (Brian) … Gave Justin Mapp too much space to deliver the cross leading to the opening goal and was lacking awareness when the ball fell to him 35 yards from goal with an open net after Mondragon collided with Feilhaber. Not his best night. (Sean)

Kevin Alston – Average Rating: 5 (Brian 5.5, Sean 4.5)
Played average in the first half, but in the 3-5-2, he upped his performance considerably. Stayed back and man-marked well. (Brian) … Gave Daniel too much space to set up the first goal and didn’t add to the attack in the first half. In the second half showed an ability to play in a three man backline and cleared a weak shot off the line. (Sean)

Benny Feilhaber – Average Rating: 2.25 (Brian 3, Sean 1.5)
Lethargic and visibly frustrated, it was clear that he just didn’t want to be on the field; red card dismissal was proof of that. (Brian) … Revs needed a cooler head from the leader of the attack. Feilhaber again took himself out of the game with his frustrations, but Steve Nicol didn’t help by playing him out of position on the left. Needless reckless challenges all night and could’ve seen two yellows much earlier. (Sean)

Pat Phelan – Average Rating: 3 (Brian 3, Sean 3)
Burned on the Nakazawa free kick that led to the 2nd goal; didn’t do much of anything to help the offense. (Brian) … Left his mark, Valdes, on his goal on the free kick. With him and McCarthy in the center in the first half, no attack was generated through the center of the midfield for the Revs. (Sean)

Stephen McCarthy – Average Rating: 2.75 (Brian 3, Sean 2.5)
One word: non-factor. Passes weren’t there, only shot of the night sailed well over the bar, and was virtually invisible all night. (Brian) … Didn’t track Ruiz on the first goal, leaving him wide open for the finish, couldn’t control his one shot and didn’t make much of an impact on either end. (Sean)

Sainey Nyassi – Average Rating: 2.75 (Brian 3, Sean 2.5)
Did nothing on the wing, crosses were either blocked or sailed to no one. Justifiably taken off at the half. (Brian) … Attempted 11 passes, 6 were turnovers (only player below 50% passing). Was tackled and lost possession 7 times. Was unable to put a single good cross into the box. Awful night. (Sean)

Kenny Mansally – Average Rating: 4 (Brian 4, Sean 4)
Did little to aid the Revs attack; of course, it would’ve helped if he had some service. (Brian) … Mansally saw little of the ball and probably needed to drop back more. He did complete 87% of his passes, but nothing that led to a promising attack. (Sean)

Rajko Lekic – Average Rating: N/A (Brian N/A, Sean 3.5)
Yes, that’s an N/A for a player who played the entire 90. No service leads to no chance for the striker to help bail the Revs out. (Brian) … Forgot he was out there minus a pair of offside calls against him. Never had a chance to contribute. (Sean)

(sub) Zak Boggs – Average Rating: 4.5 (Brian 5, Sean 4)
Briefly gave the Revs some life on the right before Feilhaber’s red doomed them before anything materialized. (Brian) … Didn’t see enough out of Boggs after coming on. Needed to provide more of a spark of the bench. (Sean)

(sub) Darrius Barnes –Average Rating: 5 (Brian 5, Sean 5)
Played well in the back, and added some much needed stability in the rear. (Brian) … Solid half of play. Hard to fault for getting caught on the late counter attack. (Sean)

(sub) Zack Schilawski – Average: N/A (Brian 4, Sean N/A)
Added a little life to what was left of the Revs attack late. (Brian) … Brought into a tough situation with little chance to make an impact. (Sean)
