MLS Morning Espresso 9/16

For those of you who, like me, are out on the East Coast, this cup of Morning Espresso arrives with an extra turbo shot or six to get you through the morning after last night’s late start times. Hey, whatever gets the job done, right?

Over at the awesomely-named Buck Shaw Stadium, San Jose invited Philadelphia to its domain for a good, ol’ fashioned contender/non-contender late-season undercard. Chris Wondolowski cracked the scoreboard with a strike in the 69th to put the ‘Quakes over the Union, 1-0.

A few miles to the east in CONCACAF Champions League action, at the awesomely-designed Rio Tinto Stadium, Toronto FC gave Real Salt Lake an early scare when Nick Rimando’s shutout streak at ended 346 minutes courtesy of Maican dos Santos’ 8th minute strike. The defending champs replied with a ruthless assault on the TFC net, which produced goals from Kyle Beckerman (21′), Jamison Olave (40′), Alvaro Saborio (69′), and Paulo Araujo, Jr. (80′) to secure the 4-1 victory.
