Days after Women’s Premier Soccer League announced that Aztec MA would not be competing in the WPSL Elite League in 2012, the team released a statement on Wednesday expressing “disappointment” over the decision.<\/p>\n
According to the statement, which was signed by Owner Mike Kersker and General Manager Brandon Nelson, the team cited “scheduling issues” with the league.<\/p>\n
“It is with great disappointment Aztec MA will not be competing in the WPSL Elite league in 2012,” the statement read. “We are saddened that we could not resolve scheduling issues with the league for the upcoming year.”<\/p>\n
One of the reasons cited for the scheduling issues was the team’s roster composition, as each of the 23 players who’d given commitments for the 2012 season were current college products.<\/p>\n
“Due to the fact that our roster was comprised entirely of collegiate players, we were faced with different constraints that could not be adequately solved in time,” the release read.<\/p>\n
Even though it won’t compete in WPSL Elite this season, the team will nevertheless field a team in WPSL East with its sights set on WPSL Elite for the 2013 season. In 2010, the team – which went by Boston Aztec at the time – won the WPSL National Championship.<\/p>\n
“We will…maintain the same coaching, training and roster structure that was created for the Elite league and intend to make a run at returning to the WPSL Final Four for the third consecutive season,” the statement read.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
