It was a rude welcome to WPSL Elite for the Mutiny, as Merrit Mathias’ hat trick led the New York Fury to a 5-1 rout of the hosts at East Longmeadow High School on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Mathias (5′, 24′, 42′) Jasmyne Spencer (14′) Megan Lenczyk (74′) found the back of the net for the Empire State-based side. Meanwhile, the Mutiny’s Tiya Gallegos ripped the shutout away from the guests with a goal in the 75th minute.<\/p>\n
A disastrous first half for the hosts gave way to a composed second frame. With Mathias’ hat trick and Spencer’s goal in the rear view, the Mutiny kept the Fury attack at bay until the 74th minute, when Lenczyk made it 5-0.<\/p>\n
But Gallegos salvaged a smidge of success a minute later. Off a Kate Howarth shot on frame, the Mutiny midfielder picked up the rebound and sent it through to give the home crowd something to cheer about before the credits rolled.<\/p>\n
