Former Revolution assistant coach Paul Mariner was appointed head coach of Toronto FC after the team relieved Aron Winter of his duties on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Mariner spent six seasons (2004-2009)\u00a0in New England as an assistant to longtime head coach Steve Nicol and heled guide the team to three straight MLS Cup finals. He was named Toronto’s\u00a0technical director in January 2011 after a stint with Plymouth Argyle from 2009-2010.<\/p>\n
But after years of hearing his name floated for head coaching vacancies, Mariner will finally get the chance to guide a team on the sidelines.<\/p>\n
“I’m a very modest man,” Mariner said. “But I’ve got unbelievable confidence in my own ability.”<\/p>\n
Mariner will need plenty of ability – and ambition – to right the Reds’ shipwrecked fortunes. Toronto lost its first nine under Winter this season and currently sits in last place at\u00a01-9-0 (3 points). Winter was named head coach in January 2011 and went 7-22-15 during his time in Toronto.<\/p>\n
But Mariner expects to hit the ground running with a third of the MLS season already in the books.<\/p>\n
“I know exactly what I’m doing in training this week,” Mariner said. “I know exactly what the team will be next weekend, barring injuries, I know how we’re going to play.”<\/p>\n
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment executive vice president and chief operating officer Tom Anselmi said that Mariner’s familiarity with the club should lead to a smooth transition.<\/p>\n
