Former New England Revolution star, Jose \u201cPepe\u201d Cancela may have turned 36 over the summer, but his offensive exploits have shown no signs of slowing down.<\/p>\n

The attacking midfielder, who earned a spot on New England Soccer Today<\/em>\u2019s Revolution All-Time Best XI<\/a><\/span> two years ago, has scored five goals so far this year — good enough for 9th<\/sup> in Costa Rica\u2019s Primera Divisi\u00f3n \u2013 in addition to five assists for his new club Deportivo Saprissa, despite playing just ten of 15 games due to injury. Cancela was also among the top 10 scorers in Costa Rica last season.<\/p>\n

Cancela\u2019s best goal this season came on Sunday with a 39th<\/sup> minute stunning volley from 30 yards out to open the scoring in a crucial 2-1 victory over Puntarenas that saw Saprissa (8-4-3, 27 points) move into second place in the Primera Divisi\u00f3n, one point behind leaders Deportiva Alajuelense.<\/p>\n

Cancela, a Uruguay native, had 27 assists and six goals in 84 regular season games from 2003-06 for the Revolution.<\/p>\n
