{"id":2072,"date":"2011-01-05T00:21:14","date_gmt":"2011-01-05T05:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nesoccertoday.com\/?p=2072"},"modified":"2011-01-05T10:27:31","modified_gmt":"2011-01-05T15:27:31","slug":"job-insecurity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nesoccertoday.com\/?p=2072","title":{"rendered":"Job (in)security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While veteran goalkeeper Matt Reis secured a contract extension last month and third-year \u2018keeper Bobby Shuttleworth was recently elevated to the senior roster, several\u00a0of their teammates\u00a0will be heading into the 2011 preseason without agreements in hand.<\/p>\n<p>First-year midfielders Zak Boggs, Jason Griffiths and Roberto \u201cBetu\u201d Linck, as well as\u00a0\u2018keeper Tim Murray, are all currently\u00a0out of\u00a0contract but will report to preseason camp, according to a January 4th report on Revolutionsoccer.net.<\/p>\n<p>Boggs, a second-round selection in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, made nine appearances, including four starts, before his season ended early\u00a0after sustaining a\u00a0concussion last summer. The 24-year-old had seemingly played himself into a key role on the team after scoring twice against the then-unbeaten Columbus Crew in his first professional start on May 8<sup>th<\/sup> until\u00a0his season was sidetracked\u00a0by injury weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>Griffiths, a third-round selection in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, didn\u2019t sign with the team until June 24<sup>th<\/sup>, but managed 10 appearances and four starts for the Revs. The 23-year-old Englishman impressed Revs head coach Steve Nicol enough to earn\u00a0a spot in the\u00a0starting line-up next to Shalrie Joseph during the summer. (Photo by CHRIS ADUAMA\/aduama.com)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Linck, who starred at Irvine Valley College (CA) prior to playing\u00a0with the Chicago Storm(XSL),\u00a0joined the team\u00a0on July 30<sup>th<\/sup>. The 22-year-old Brazilian made two substitute appearances and\u00a0added creativity in the attack, but didn\u2019t see the field after a\u00a020-minute cameo\u00a0at right midfield during the SuperLiga Final on September 1st. Linck subsequently suffered a strained right abductor injury on October 1st that sidelined him for the\u00a0remainder of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Murray, a Haverhill, Mass. native, joined the club in\u00a0April\u00a0and\u00a0inherited the\u00a0third-string goalkeeper responsibilities. Murray saw no first team action, but served as back-up keeper when Reis and Burpo both suffered\u00a0injuries at various points in the season.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, veteran midfielders Khano Smith and Nico Colaluca, as well as\u00a0goalkeeper Preston Burpo, remain eligible to return after their contract options were declined and were not selected in the MLS Re-Entry Draft. However, it appears that\u00a0the Revs are in no\u00a0rush to re-sign any of the trio.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Shuttleworth,\u00a0who served as the\u00a0Revs back-up goalkeeper for the bulk of the season before he was called into duty on May 29th after Preston Burpo suffered a serious leg injury, was elevated from the developmental to the senior roster. The 23-year-old ended up making six regular season starts, recording a 3-3-0 record and a 1.62 goals against average.
