The New England Revolution added experience to its technical staff on Friday as former D.C. United coach Tom Soehn was named an assistant coach.<\/p>\n
Soehn, who coached D.C. United from 2007-09 before a brief stint in Vancouver during the 2010 season,\u00a0joins Jay Heaps’ coaching staff two weeks prior to the start of the preseason.<\/p>\n
“I\u2019m very excited to add Tom to our staff,\u201d Heaps said in a team release on Friday. \u201cHe brings a tremendous amount of experience in MLS \u2013 as a successful assistant coach, head coach and team executive \u2013 which will prove valuable to the Revolution. Tom was someone I very much respected as both a player and an opposing coach, and we\u2019re excited to get him working with the team and the staff this weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 47-year-old assistant joins fellow assistant Jay Miller and goalkeeper coach Remi Roy on Heaps’ coaching staff.<\/p>\n
Soehn began his coaching career in 2001 with the Chicago Fire, where\u00a0he\u00a0served as Bob Bradley’s assistant for two seasons. He moved on to D.C. United in 2004, and was an assistant under Peter Nowak. He earned the head coaching title in 2007, and remained with the club through the 2009 season.<\/p>\n
In 2010, he was named\u00a0director of soccer operations for the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps. After coach\u00a0Teitur Thordarson was dismissed in May 2011, Soehn returned to the bench on an interim basis before returning to the front office full time in 2012.<\/p>\n
Under his watch, the Whitecaps signed\u00a0Lee Nguyen and Brad Knighton, both of whom eventually joined the Revolution. Nguyen was acquired by\u00a0Vancouver via\u00a0the allocation order in January 2012, but was waived\u00a0two months later. Knighton was signed by the Whitecaps\u00a0prior to the 2012 season and played two seasons\u00a0with the club before he was acquired by the Revolution last month.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m excited to join the New England Revolution,\u201d Soehn said in a team release on Friday. \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to getting to work with Jay and the staff and beginning our work for the 2014 season.”<\/p>\n
Soehn will join the coaching staff in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. for the MLS Combine, which kicked off on Thursday and will run through Tuesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
