BALTIMORE, Md. – Seeking to find another strong, defensive presence in their midfield, the Revolution selected one of the best at the 24th pick with their selection of central midfielder Stephen McCarthy.<\/p>\n

The 6-4 center half transferred to\u00a0the University of North Carolina from Santa Clara in 2010\u00a0earned Second Team All-ACC honors during his lone season in the perenially-strong ACC.<\/p>\n

With some scouting reports had him tabbed as the best central midfielder in the SuperDraft, Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns jumped at the chance to take the Tar Heel.<\/p>\n

“We were pleasantly surprised that he was there in the second round for us to take,” said Burns. “We felt pretty good about (taking him there).”<\/p>\n

Though history has shown that the Revolution\u00a0often make\u00a0it a habit\u00a0of drafting\u00a0ACC players, the tall center half said he didn’t envision coming to New England prior to the SuperDraft.<\/p>\n

“I wasn’t expecting it, but I am so excited and happy,” said McCarthy. “I can’t wait to get out there.”<\/p>\n

Despite the top billing, the physical\u00a0midfielder admitted that he had alot to learn in MLS.<\/p>\n

“It’s going to take a little time to get used to the speed of the league,” said McCarthy. “I spoke to\u00a0Zac Loyd\u00a0(who was drafted by FC Dallas from UNC in 2010)\u00a0and he\u00a0told me, ‘make sure you’re fit’.”<\/p>\n

Despite the obvious and unforgiving transition that every newcomer has to overcome to succeed in MLS, McCarthy feels that the strong competition in the ACC has helped prepare him.<\/p>\n

“It’s definitely a battle every week in the ACC,” said McCarthy. “Every team can beat every other team (inside the conference), so I think that will do nothing but help.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
