Former New England Revolution head coach Fernando Clavijo is battling cancer according to a\u00a0message\u00a0sent on Twitter\u00a0by his son, Nicolas, on Monday.<\/p>\n

According to the tweet, Clavijo was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, which is a blood disorder related to lymphoma and leukemia, because it usually arises in the bone marrow, according to WebMd.com.<\/p>\n

There is no cure for multiple myeloma, but treatments are available that slow its progression. According to cancer.org, survival rates range from 29 months to 62 months depending upon the stage of the cancer. <\/a><\/p>\n

Clavijo, who coached the club from 2000-2002 and compiled a 20-27-12 record, currently serves as technical director for FC Dallas, a post he’s held since\u00a02012.\u00a0Prior to his stint in Dallas, the\u00a058-year-old former U.S. International served as coach for the Colorado Rapids from 2005-2008.<\/p>\n

The Uruguayan-born Clavijo\u00a0immigrated to the United States in 1979, and went on to play in the 1994 World Cup for the U.S. Men’s National Team. During his international career,\u00a0he was\u00a0capped 61 times from 1990-94.<\/p>\n
