Downs Falcos (9\/24\/1921)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Welcome to this week\u2019s edition of \u201cThrowback Thursday,\u201d where we take a trip back in time to spotlight some of the clubs that made their mark on the New England soccer landscape over the past century.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This week, we venture back to\u00a0the second week of American Soccer League play, where Fall River United headed north to face the Holyoke Falcos, who had just beaten the Spindle City aggregate 2-0 the previous week. DOWNS FALCOS <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Connie Lynch Takes Field, Although in Poor Shape, Spears His Eleven to a 2 to 0 Win Over Holyoke Club &#8211; Locals Outplay Home Club on the Offense and\u00a0 Defense <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>September 24, 1921<\/p>\n<p>HOLYOKE, Mass. &#8211; A hobbled Connie Lynch scored the opening goal and Fall River United never looked back as they sealed a 2-0 win over the Holyoke Falcos on Saturday at the Berkshire Street Grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Lynch, who suffered a broken leg the year previous, tallied\u00a0in the 28th minute\u00a0to give the guests the lead going into halftime. Tom McFarlane added another after the break while Chick Albion kept the sheet clean.<\/p>\n<p>The win allowed the Uniteds to secure their first win of the season (1-1-0), while the loss prevented the Falcos (1-1-0)from allowing the local crowd to head home happy.<\/p>\n<p>The Uniteds saw little danger in the first half as they outclassed the Falcos at their home grounds. In fact, the guests kept the ball out of its own end for 35 of the first 45 minutes. As for Lynch, the player-coach got made his return from injury a successful one when he grabbed a pass from Paddy Butler, bustled through Holyoke&#8217;s defense, and scored the first goal of the match.<\/p>\n<p>Holyoke tried to respond in the second half, but they were rarely effective. While the hosts were trying to assemble an attack, the knocked on the door repeatedly, and crashed through when McFarlane blasted a shot from 20 yards that beat Patrick McManus.<\/p>\n<p>The affair was a physical one, as referee Robert Muphy issued a number of warnings to the guilty parties.<\/p>\n<p>The summary:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Falcos\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0F.R.
