Have Revolution supporters already witnessed the final act of Jermaine Jones’ career in New England?<\/p>\n

With the club’s season over, and star midfielder’s contract set to expire in the offseason, the 33-year-old midfielder took to Instagram on Friday to express his gratitude for his time in New England, which spanned the course of 18 months. <\/p>\n

“I am so thankful what has happened in one and a half years with the club, the teammates & fans, the city of Boston!,” Jones wrote. “I appreciate the love from everybody! I’m going home now and finally enjoying my family! Very excited to see what will be the next step in our life!”<\/p>\n

Jones signed an 18-month, $4.7 million deal with the Revolution in August 2014, and helped lead them to their first MLS Cup final in seven years. At the time, it appeared to be a perfect marriage: the fiery and talented midfielder gave the young Revolution an edge, as well as a noticeable swagger on the pitch.<\/p>\n

But 2015 proved to be a very different kind of year for both parties. Jones underwent sports hernia surgery in February 2015, delaying the start of his season. He suffered another groin strain in May, requiring a second sports hernia procedure. All told, the midfielder missed 15 games due to injury as the Revolution bowed out of the postseason in Wednesday’s knockout round.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Jones told the local media that no progress had been made in negotiations for a contract extension<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody knows that it\u2019s easy to know the numbers of other players \u2013 you can just look it up,\u201d Jones said at the time. \u201cThe club knows what I want, my agent knows it, and I\u2019ll be focused that we\u2019ll make it the same as last season.\u201d<\/p>\n

If Jones decides to pursue an opportunity elsewhere, the record will show that his final moments in a Revolution kit were less than spectacular. In the waning minutes of Wednesday’s match, Jones was issued a red card for charging referee Mark Geiger over a disputed non-call on a DC handball inside the box.<\/a> <\/p>\n

As a result of his outburst, Jones will likely face a lengthy ban at the start of next season, and could also miss time with the national team, as well.<\/a><\/p>\n
