Providence City FC won promotion following their league-clinching 4-1 win over BCS XI on Saturday at Falzone Field in Waltham, Mass.<\/p>\n

The Rogues, who fell short of promotion last season by a single point, will compete in the second division come 2018. They finished the year with 49 points, and a whopping plus-61 goal differential, tops in the third-division south.<\/p>\n

“After a devastating 2016, we missed out on promotion by a point. We were gutted,” Providence City defender Jason Rego told NESoccerToday<\/em>. “We learned from our mistakes, and only looked forward in 2017.”<\/p>\n

Needing three points to secure promotion with second-place Tarrafal (Brockton, Mass.) on their heels, Providence City opened the scoring early and never looked back during Saturday’s contest.<\/p>\n

Carlos Ruiz struck in the 30th minute before Danny O’Neill doubled the advantage in the 40th minute. Ray Rossi tallied near the hour mark before the XI’s Adam Doffini brought one back in the 75th minute. O’Neill’s stoppage time strike capped the scoring, setting the stage for a well-deserved post-match celebration.<\/p>\n

The third-division south trophy was actually the second piece of hardware collected by the club from Renaissance City. During the summer, the Rogues won the league in FA1, a southeastern New England-based amateur league.<\/p>\n

Additionally, they’ll be competing for the McKenzie Cup championship next month after booking a spot in the tournament final by beating Taunton Eagles earlier this month. The Rogues will face the winner of the GPS Omens-GPM FC semifinal.<\/p>\n

While Providence City will certainly bask in the glory of all that comes with promotion, not to mention the potential of raising a third trophy, Rego took a longer view of what Saturday’s victory signifies.<\/p>\n

“We’re setting the groundwork for what’s to come in this club,” Rego said. “We are Providence City, and we are here for the long haul.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
