FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – One minute. That\u2019s the total amount of time Ryan Kinne<\/span><\/span> saw on the field with the Revolution first team last season.<\/p>\n

Typically, a player with a stat line of sixty seconds at the end of his rookie season never sees another minute. For most, it\u2019s a one-way ticket out of MLS.<\/p>\n

But that wasn\u2019t<\/span><\/span> the case for the speedy winger. Despite the fleeting cameo – which came\u00a0during an 89th minute substitute appearance\u00a0against D.C. on Mar. 26 –\u00a0 at least one person was impressed by what he saw in last year\u2019s third-round SuperDraft<\/span><\/span> selection.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s got an excellent first touch and good pace,\u201d first year Revolution head coach Jay Heaps said. \u201cHe\u2019s player that I didn\u2019t<\/span><\/span> get to see enough of last year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heaps wasn\u2019t<\/span><\/span> the only one who didn\u2019t<\/span><\/span> get to see much of Kinne<\/span><\/span> last year. With only a minute of MLS action, the 5-8 winger had to make a name for himself in practice and with the reserves.<\/p>\n

But even though he earned 12 starts between Reserve League and Open Cup competition, Kinne<\/span><\/span> felt shortchanged. He worked hard to get himself in a position to get another look. He played wherever the coaches asked him. No dice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI obviously didn\u2019t<\/span><\/span> get that much time (to prove myself),\u201d Kinne<\/span><\/span> said. \u201cI felt like I wasn\u2019t<\/span><\/span> being taught or getting much instruction. That\u2019s changed quite a bit this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, with Heaps at the helm, Kinne<\/span><\/span> feels better about his chances. And it\u2019s not just because he\u2019s got a fresh set of eyes on him. Rather, it\u2019s the fact that the first year head coach has taken the time to invest in the former Monmouth midfielder.<\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s hands-on instruction, or face-to-face discussions about technique, Kinne<\/span><\/span> believes that he\u2019s finally getting the long look that he may not have gotten last year.<\/p>\n

For his part, Heaps admits that his approach to Kinne\u2019s development is similar to that of the other rookies in camp. To the similarly energetic coach, Kinne<\/span><\/span> is essentially a first-year player given the lack of first experience he saw last season.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s basically like a rookie,\u201d Heaps said. \u201cYou\u2019re trying to a longer look at him and see how he adapts to playing at this level.\u201d<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s one thing Kinne\u2019s already shown he can do, it\u2019s adapt. In college,\u00a0he was used primarily as an outside midfielder\/forward. But last year, Kinne<\/span><\/span> saw time at right back and central midfielder during Reserve League action, all attempts to show the technical staff he was ready to do anything asked of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnywhere they want me to play to help this team,\u201d Kinne<\/span><\/span> said. \u201cI\u2019m more than willing to (do it).\u201d<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old Naugatuck<\/span>, Conn. native\u00a0realizes it\u2019s going to take more than being <\/span>a good soldier to make a lasting impression. Even though he may have been discouraged by the lack of playing time, Kinne<\/span><\/span> didn\u2019t<\/span><\/span> crumple up and throw his first year into the waste basket.<\/p>\n

Instead, he learned to lean on veteran leaders like Shalrie<\/span><\/span> Joseph and Chris Tierney not only for encouragement, but for advice on how to perform, train and practice like a professional.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust being in the professional environment for that whole year and being around veteran guys was unbelievable,\u201d Kinne<\/span><\/span> said. \u201cThey really instilled confidence (in me). I\u2019m looking forward to a fresh start with Jay.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the likes of Joseph and Tierney already showing their belief in him,\u00a0the second-year winger\u00a0knows that the one person he\u2019ll have to prove himself to is the one wearing the training top with the \u201cJH\u201d on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully, Jay will put some faith into me this year and give me a shot,\u201d Kinne<\/span><\/span> said. \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to delivering. It would be nice to get some more time in and prove that I can play in this league.\u201d<\/p>\n

It may be tough to gauge performance from preseason practice and intra<\/span><\/span>-squad scrimmages, but Kinne<\/span><\/span> certainly hasn\u2019t<\/span><\/span> hurt his chances through the first four weeks of camp. In one of the team\u2019s first 11-v-11 scrimmages in Casa<\/span><\/span> Grande<\/span><\/span>, Kinne<\/span><\/span> scored the lone goal from the right back position.<\/p>\n

Now that the preseason is well underway, Heaps is finally getting the look that he didn\u2019t<\/span><\/span> get last year. And while it may be too early to deliver the verdict on Kinne<\/span><\/span> making the cut\u00a0\u2013 especially with a formidable set of preseason\u00a0games against\u00a0Los Angeles, New York and Salt Lake\u00a0on tap – Heaps is optimistic about the winger\u2019s ability to seize the second chance afforded to him this winter.<\/p>\n
