FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution announced the addition of Akron University midfielder Scott Caldwell on Friday. Caldwell, a Braintree, Mass. native, captained the Revs’ Under-18 squad in its inaugural campaign in 2008-09 and becomes the team’s second Homegrown player, joining Diego Fagundez.

“I am excited to play for the team I grew up watching. Having grown up watching Mike Burns and Jay Heaps, it will be cool to work under and play for them,” Caldwell said in a statement on Friday. “I know it will be a lot of hard work, but I hope to contribute to the team. It was always my goal to play for the Revolution and I am so happy it is finally happening.”

On Monday, the 21-year-old Caldwell, who has a 3.94 cumulative GPA as an accounting major, was named the NSCAA Scholar All-America Player of the Year. Caldwell was also named a first-team All-American in 2012, was the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, and was a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy. He finished the 2012 season with nine goals and 10 assists.

In total, Caldwell played in 88 games (66 starts), recording 20 goals and 22 assists in four years at Akron. Caldwell’s highlights at Akron include scoring the game winning goal in a 1-0 victory against Louisville in the 2010 College Cup national championship match.

“We’re very pleased to add Scott to our roster as our second Homegrown player signing,” Revolution General Manager Michael Burns said in a statement on Friday. “He’s had a very successful college career at Akron and he’s played very well when we have had him in with our first team during his college breaks. We look forward to integrating him with the first team on a permanent basis when the team reconvenes in a month for the 2013 preseason.”

Caldwell is also a former member of the Under-18, Under-17, Under-15 and Under-14 national teams. The 5-foot-8 midfielder participated in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in January 2009 as part of the U.S. U-18s.
