It appears the Revolution are ready to open their wallets for one of the most sought after players on the MLS market.

On Friday, Revolution general manager Michael Burns confirmed that the team is in pursuit of U.S. Men’s National Team regular and former Schalke 04 midfielder Jermaine Jones.

“We’ve received approval from our ownership to pursue Jermaine,” Burns told FOXSoccer.com on Friday. “We’re interested in Jermaine and we’ve been in contact with MLS.”

But the Revolution aren’t the only club attempting to secure the 32-year-old midfielder. The Chicago Fire are also looking to land the former Bundesliga veteran, whose American father hails from the Windy City.

MLS is expected to the collect the bids of interested clubs in the coming days, and steer Jones toward the club with the most attractive offer.

Should the Revolution, who’ve been long known for their parsimonious ways, somehow come out with the best bid and secure Jones, his addition would immediately fortify a midfield that’s lost its form since Andy Dorman suffered an MCL sprain last month.

Of course, his services would come at a premium. Jones is reportedly seeking an annual contract in the $3-5 million range that would make him one of the top 10 paid players in the league and which would require any club intending to sign him to use a Designated Player spot.

Jones, a gritty, yet technically gifted central midfielder, would give the Revolution one of the best defensive midfielders in MLS. His ability to uncoil the killer pass should also open up opportunities for the likes of Diego Fagundez, Patrick Mullins and Kelyn Rowe, all of whom have struggled with inconsistency this season.

The Revolution currently have four open roster spots at their disposal. The MLS roster freeze is Sept. 15.
