Portland Phoenix Adds Forward, Defender
- Updated: April 13, 2012
MPS Portland Phoenix added two familiar faces to their squad on Friday by signing forward Trevor Hoxsie and defender Cameron Omsberg.
Hoxsie, who made a one game cameo with the squad in 2011, returns to Portland after a sophomore season at Roger Williams University (R.I.) that saw him score 12 goals and collect five assists in 13 games. The Scarborough, Maine product was also selected to the 2011 NSCAA Division lll Men’s All-New England team Second Team.
“Trevor is a clever forward who will cause our opposition problems this summer,” Portland head coach Paul Baber said in a statement. “He has shown he can score goals and we are hoping he can replicate his collegiate form with us.”
Omsberg, who played in eight games with Portland in 2011, co-captained the Lehigh University (Pa.) squad last fall and was part of defensive unit that only allowed 0.44 goals per game. The Belgrade, Maine native started all 17 games he played for the Mountain Hawks, and added a goal and an assist to the team’s cause in 2011.
“Cameron…has the versatility to be played at either the back or in midfield,” Baber said. “We are expecting him to step up to the challenge and be a big part of the squads’ success this summer.”
In addition to Hoxsie and Omsberg, the team also announced that Alex Marecki (Bowdoin College), Isaah Eagles (UMaine-Machias) Johnny Murphy (Bates College) and Theirry Gakire will be in camp with the club for the preseason.
The Phoenix season kicks off on May 12 when they host the Vermont Voltage at Memorial Field at Deering High School in Portland, with the opening whistle set to screech at 6:00pm.
