EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Alonso Villasenor scored a brace to help lead East Providence Sports to a convincing 5-2 win over FC Porto NB (New Bedford, Mass.) to kick off its 2012 Ligas Unidas Soccer Association (LUSA) season Sunday at Riverside Recreation Park.
Villasenor’s first goal came minutes before halftime while the encore arrived late in the second frame. Meanwhile, Armando Gomes, Peter Maciel and Jimmy Hernandez each tallied for E.P. Porto’s Dercelino DeBritto collected both goals for the guests.
DeBritto opened the scoring early before Gomes leveled it from the run of play shortly thereafter. DeBritto’s second strike put Porto back on top, but it was a lead that would not last.
Midway through the first half, E.P. earned a penalty, which Maciel stepped up and sent inside the right post. Villasenor made his mark on the sheet when Hernandez crossed it toward the far post, where the outside midfielder volleyed it through to put the hosts ahead before the half.
Villasenor returned the favor after the hour when he sent it into the area, where Hernandez buried it to double the lead.
In the waning minutes, Villasenor capped the scoring when he raced into the box and beat the Porto keeper to give his squad a five goal showing in the season opener.
E.P Sports returns to action at 6pm on Saturday, May 5 against Taunton Sports at Pepe Amaral Field in Taunton, Mass.
