Guy to Join Guam National Team

Ryan Guy may not be on Jurgen Klinsmann’s radar, but that won’t stop the Revolution midfielder from earning his first international cap before the close of the calendar year.
According to guampdn.com, Guy, whose father is former Guam senator Jesse Lujan, has decided to join the Guam National Team, which will resume its schedule in December.
“It’s a community that I’ve always felt a part of,” Guy told gumapdn.com on Wednesday. “I am really excited. I look forward to helping the team push Guam soccer to new heights internationally. I really hope we’ll blow it out of the water and surprise other international teams.”
It was a decision Guy didn’t make rashly. After all, nearly every American soccer player hopes to get the call up for the U.S. National team. And that was a hope that the San Diego, Calif. native certainly harbored.
But after giving it some thought, the 26-year-old midfielder decided it was best to join the Matao.
“I had been weighing the pros and cons and it came out about even,” Guy told the site. “What it came down to was something bigger than me – to be part of a group that has been positively influencing the future generations of Guam soccer.”
One person who’s happy with the decision? Matao head coach Gary White.
“Ryan will bring the experience we need in dealing with game scenarios and also a level of creativity on the field that will take pressure off of our current leading players,” White told gaumpdn.com. “His style of play, which is very attack-minded, fits perfectly with our team’s style. He not only creates opportunities to score goals, but he also scores goals as well. He’ll provide a new dimension of attack for the team.”
The Matao will be competing in the East Asian Cup in December and will travel to Hong Kong, where they’ll face Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and North Korea in the second round of the tournament.
In 11 games with the Revolution this season, the versatile midfielder has earned nine starts and collected an assist in the Revolution’s 3-1 over the Galaxy on Mar. 31. He was recently named Man of the Match in the Revolution’s 0-0 draw at Sporting K.C. on Jul. 21.
