Brown Edges URI in Season Opener

Thomas McNamara converted a 23rd minute penalty to lift 24th-ranked Brown to a 1-0 victory over Rhode Island in the Bears’ season opener at Stevenson Field.

The senior midfielder, who also collected a team-high four shots on the night, put it past Adam Blanchard from the spot while Brown’s defense did the rest in the first game of the Ocean State Classic.

Blanchard stopped eight shots on the night, while his counterpart, Sam Kernan-Schloss, made a trio of saves to earn the clean sheet.

The Rams started off the game with a physcial approach in the first half by collecting 12 fouls in the first half, with Trevor Moran, Mike Casey and Jamie Eckmayer all given cautions before the interval.

Brown returns to action on Monday for the Ocean State Classic Championship against Providence College at the URI Soccer Complex in Kingston, R.I. The game kicks off at 5pm. Rhode Island will play Bryant in the consolation game, which will follow the Championship tilt at 7:30pm.
