On the eve of the SuperDraft, the New England Revolution re-signed versatile midfielder Chris Tierney to a long term contract. Tierney, entering his fourth year with the team, had a career year in 2010.
“Chris is a very versatile player and gives us a lot of options on the field,” Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns said. “He is also a great leader for us on the field and in the locker room so we’re pleased he is committing to the club.”
Tierney had a combined 20 league appearances over his first two seasons, but really showed his worth last year with a career high 27 league appearances, including 26 starts, and 33 appearances through all competitions. The natural left midfielder not only saw time at his preferred spot, but also filled in at left back, right back, and central midfield throughout the season.
The 25-year-old contributed a goal and four assists last season, mostly as a left midfielder. With the addition of veteran left back Didier Domi, Tierney should see more time in his favored position this season.
The University of Virginia product was originally selected by the Revs in the first round (13th overall) of the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft. Tierney, a Wellesley, Mass. native, attended Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Mass. prior to college.
