Revolution Academy product Dominik Machado scored twice to power Providence College to a 3-0 Second Round NCAA tournament win over Dartmouth on Sunday at Ray Treacy Track in Providence, R.I.
After Mac Steeves opened the scoring in the 48th minute, Machado padded the lead with strikes in the 56th and 79th minutes. Providence keeper Keasel Broome made four saves en route to his seventh clean sheet of the season.
The Friars, who advanced to the Third Round for the first time program history, will face UC-Irvine on Sunday at Ray Treacy Track. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm. With the loss, the Big Green finished the season at 12-5-2.
Following a scoreless first half in which Keasel took center stage by making a trio of stops to thwart the Big Green before the break.
But Providence recommitted themselves on offense out the break, leading to the opener only three minutes into the second stanza. Jeff Kilday received a pass along the right flank from Phil Towler, and skimmed it inside the six for Steeves, who scored his ninth goal of the season.
The scoreline didn’t stay close for long after Machado converted a pass from Thomas Ballenthin to make it a two-goal gap eight minutes after Steeves’ strike.
Machado eliminated any doubt about the result in the 79th minute when he came out the victor on a 50/50 ball near the top of the box and sent it through to send the Friars on their way to the program’s first Third Round tournament appearance.
