Finishing On a High Note

The Revolution offense came alive in a 3-0 win over PDL side FC Tucson in Saturday’s Desert Diamond Cup finale at Kino North Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
Teal Bunbury opened the scoring in the 30th minute while Kelyn Rowe scribbled his name on the sheet in the 51st minute. Sean Okoli capped it with a 91st minute strike while Bobby Shuttleworth helped the Revolution claim their first clean sheet of the winter.
With the win, the Revolution finish the preseason with a 3-2-1 record. Okoli and Charlie Davies both led the club in scoring this winter with each grabbing two goals.
Pitted against PDL competition, the Revolution predictably controlled much of the match, and wasted no time in doing so, either. Revolution coach Jay Heaps fielded a first-choice lineup, and the regulars went to work early.
Diego Fagundez combined with Juan Agudelo early, and the Revolution striker found no fewer than three scoring opportunities during the first half. At the half-hour mark, Agudelo set up Bunbury on a well-weighted through ball, which the Revolution winger sent through to put the Revolution on top.
Tucson’s best chance came in the 60th minute, when Dominic Papa pierced through to the defense and blasted a shot that strayed just wide of the post.
The Revolution’s second goal also came from an unusual sequence in which Rowe fired a looping ball that appeared to seek out a teammate. But instead, the ball dropped into the back of the net to double the lead.
Heaps made a slew of substitutions after the hour, and one of them – Okoli – went on to score the final goal of the preseason in stoppage time
The Revolution will kick off the regular season on Mar. 8 against the Seattle Sounders at CenturyLink Field. Kickoff is set for 9:30pm ET.
