Stat Check Tuesday
- Updated: March 24, 2015
With the regular season in full swing, we’re starting to get a clearer picture of where the Revolution are finding success, and where they need improvement.
Starting this week, we’ll take a look at where the club ranks in a few key areas, and a quick-hit analysis of that number.
(Note: the following statistics can be found on whoscored.com and squawka.com, both of which use information gathered from OPTA to calculate its figures.)
Total chances (key passes + assists): 21 (10th)
Analysis: There’s no doubt the Revolution are finding opportunities, especially in their last two. But cashing in those chances has obviously been a problem, and not just by way of the eyeball test. The Revolution are the only club inside of the top-10 to not score a goal.
Passing accuracy: 76.4 percent (9th)
Analysis: Connecting with teammates hasn’t been a problem on the whole, though there’s plenty of room for improvement. It’s worth noting that as much as the Revolution have struggled in the final third, they actually come in seventh in total key passes (21). Another interesting stat is that the club’s average pass distance – 21 meters – is the longest in MLS. Lastly, an additional item related to passing accuracy is that the club ranks fourth in total passes (1,154) and completed passes (887).
Shooting accuracy: 29 percent (19th)
Analysis: No surprise here given the finishing woes inside the final third. They’re 28 total shots they’ve collected puts them in the 12th spot for that category.
Defensive actions (interceptions + blocked shots + clearances): 130 (7th)
Analysis: After dealing with the likes of Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins and David Villa early on, it’s not surprising to see the Revolution rank inside of the top-10 in this category. Breaking down this stat further, the club ranks sixth in interceptions (49), seventh in blocked shots (8) and 10th in clearances (73).
Performance score*: 44 (last)
*Squawka.com uses an aggregate of key stats such as goals scored and conceded, defensive actions and chances created and combines them into an overall score.
Analysis: Given that the club’s goal differential remains at negative-5, their shooting accuracy is 29 percent, and no one’s found the back of the net as of yet, this number is easily the most sobering one of them all. Breaking it down further, the club’s defensive score is 122 (18th), while the attacking score is 21 (last). Their possession score came in at negative-99 (14th), though it’s worth noting that only two teams at this juncture have a positive possession score (Columbus and Orlando City, respectively).
How does their current score compare to last year’s through the first three games? After their 0-0 draw to Vancouver on Mar. 22, 2014, the club’s performance score was 243.
