With their first goal and first victory of the 2015 season firmly secured during Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Earthquakes, let’s take a look at where the Revolution rank in some important statistical categories:

(Note: the following statistics can be found on whoscored.com and squawka.com, both of which use information gathered from OPTA to calculate its figures.)

Total chances (key passes + assists): 34 (eighth)
Analysis: The Revolution created 13 attacking chances during Saturday’s match, a much-improved number considering how poorly they looked in the final third a month ago. Not surprisingly, the squad’s best attacking effort comes in their second straight match at home, a testament to their comfort within the friendly confines of Gillette Stadium. Kelyn Rowe’s brace was a clear indication that the club had no qualms about stepping on the pedal.

Passing accuracy: 76.2 percent (11th)
Analysis: Keeping the ball still remains an area for improvement as their average dipped 0.20 percent following Saturday’s performance. The conditions probably didn’t help matters, but one bright area was Daigo Kobayashi’s remarkable 92.9 percent completion rate.

Shooting accuracy: 38 percent (eighth)
Analysis: Scoring two goals and putting eight of their 20 shots on target against the Earthquakes allowed the Revolution to better their overall accuracy by nearly 10 percent within a 90 minute span. Saturday’s performance also allowed the squad to improve their ranking from 19th to eighth.

Defensive actions (interceptions + blocked shots + clearances): 164 (14th)
Analysis: The Revolution’s ranking in this department actually dropped dramatically after they were ranked seventh last week. This could be attributable to the fact that San Jose was generally poor in the final third for the bulk of the match, leaving few opportunities to record the above statistics.

Performance score*: 281 (18th)
*Squawka.com uses an aggregate of key stats such as goals scored and conceded, defensive actions and chances created and combines them into an overall score.
Analysis: It may be hard to believe that the club’s score ranks near the bottom, but consider that they were dead last following the Montreal match. Obviously a win helps matters. At the same time, one game won’t turn around a season. There’s still plenty of work to put in before the Revolution can confidently say that they’ve turned the corner on their early-season struggles.

How does their current score compare to last year’s through the first four games? After their 2-1 win at San Jose on Mar. 30, 2014, the club’s performance score was 397.

Did you know? Daigo Kobayashi has completed 90.1 percent of his 139 passes, the highest percentage among MLS players with at least 300 minutes of action this season. Additionally, 71 percent of his 128 completed passes were forward passes.
