Brazilian CB Silva on Trial w/ Revs
- Updated: April 8, 2015
The New England Revolution invited Brazilian center back Renato Silva for a trial this week as the club looks to improve its defensive depth.
Silva, 31, has spent the bulk of his career in the Brazilian first division playing for Flamengo (2005-2006), Fluminense (2007), and Vasco da Gama (2011-20014). He most recently played for Santa Cruz before his contract expired in Nov. 2014.
The Revolution currently have six pure defenders on the roster. They lost two center backs – A.J. Soares and Stephen McCarthy – during the offseason.
During last month’s Season Ticket Holder Welcome Event, Revolution general manager Michael Burns told the audience that the club was looking to add a defender with two open roster spots at its disposal.
Should Silva, who’s listed at 6-0, 176 lbs., signed with the Revolution, he would occupy an international roster spot. The Revolution traded one such spot to Vancouver last week for allocation money.
