Breakers Fall in Opener to Thorns
- Updated: April 12, 2015
It was a rough start to the regular season for the Boston Breakers on Saturday after they fell to Portland Thorns FC 4-1 in front of 13,386 at Providence Park.
Stephanie McCaffrey scored her first professional goal in the 63rd minute, but it simply wasn’t enough against a high-powered Portland attack. Allie Long scored in the 71st and 72nd minutes, while Mana Shim and Sinead Farrelly both tallied in the 38th and 21st minutes.
Katie Schoepfer gave the guests their best shout at equalizing in the 23rd minute after she blasted a rocket that was saved by Michelle Betos.
Betos was also tested by Kristie Mewis in the 63rd minute after the Boston College product put a shot from the top of the box on frame.
The Breakers return to action on Apr. 26 when they host the Houston Dash at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Cambridge, Mass. Kickoff is set for 5:00pm.
