The New England Revolution loaned third-string goalkeeper Trevor Spangenberg to the Richmond Kickers on Friday ahead of the USL side’s upcoming match against FC Montreal on Saturday. Spangenberg will re-join the Revolution following the match.

Richmond, which is the USL affiliate of DC United, is in need of a goalkeeper as Travis Worra is set to join United for its match against Vancouver this weekend. Worra is expected to serve as Andrew Dykstra’s backup with starter Bill Hamid unlikely to suit up or Saturday’s contest against the Whitecaps.

With Worra likely en route to Vancouver with the rest of the United contingent, the Kickers were left with only one goalkeeper – Ryan Taylor – at their disposal on Saturday. A source told New England Soccer Today on Friday that Spangenberg will start Saturday’s contest.

Spangenberg is no a stranger to the USL, as he made two appearances with USL PDL side Laredo Heat in 2010 and 20 appearances with the Springfield Demize in 2012-2013, while he was still in college at Missouri State. Spangenberg went undrafted after graduating, but earned a contract during an impressive trail with Chivas USA. Spangenberg was buried as the third goalkeeper behind Dan Kennedy and Tim Melia.

Spangenberg ended up making his MLS debut on May 3, 2014 against the Houston Dynamo, where he conceded a goal and made one save in 22 minutes. Spangenberg moved up to second on the depth chart when Tim Melia was waived later in the season, but did not make an appearance as Dan Kennedy had a stronghold on Chivas’ starting role.

Spangenberg was not taken in the dispersal draft, but signed with Revolution on Mar. 5, 2015 as the team’s third goalkeeper, behind Bobby Shuttleworth and Brad Knighton.
