A week after making his debut USL start, Tyler Rudy registered his first professional assist for the Rochester Rhinos their 2-0 win over New York Red Bulls II on Sunday at Sahlen’s Stadium.

In the 40th minute, Rudy collected a loose ball at the corner of the box and fired a shot that was turned away by Santiago Castano’s diving effort But Alex Dixon volleyed the deflection into an open net for his third goal of the season.

Rudy also had a hand in the second Rhinos’ strike, too. In the 68th minute, he stole the ball along the right flank at midfield and started a successful counter attack.

The Revolution loanee passed to Christain Volesky, who moved the ball from right to left, as he found forward Colin Rolfe down the left side. Rolfe slipped a through ball to Jonny Mendoza, who scored his second goal of the year and provided an insurance goal to the Rhinos late in the game.

In total, Rudy played 73 minutes with an assist and his first two shots of the season, both of which were on goal.

The game also marked a first for fellow Revolution loanee, Timi Melgrew, who made his first professional appearance, coming in as a sub for Johnny Mendoza in the 77th minute.

Providence College graduate Marcos Ugarte did not make an appearance for this first time this season. The midfielder had played in all five games, including two starts, coming into the home opener Sunday.

Rochester ends the weekend tied in first place in the USL Eastern Conference. Their 4-0-2 record puts them with 14 points in six games, tying them with the Richmond Kickers, who hold the same record.

The Rhinos are one of four USL teams that remains unbeaten, along with the Charleston Battery (4-0-1 record) and Louisville City FC (2-0-3 record). Rochester returns to action on May 2 when they face FC Montreal on at Stade Saputo Turf Field.
