Breakers Fall to Flash

Morgan Marlborough scored early, but the Western New York Flash was simply too much for the Breakers, who fell 3-1 at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y. on Saturday.

Marlborough struck in the 15th minute to give the Breakers an early lead, but the Flash equalized shortly thereafter on a goal from Samantha Mewis in the 23rd minute. The hosts pulled away in the second half with goals from Becky Edwards and Sydney Leroux in the 62nd minute and 88th minute, respectively.

The opening goal from Marlborough materialized after Stephanie McCaffrey went down the left and crossed it for the Breakers’ forward, who ran onto it and tapped it through to draw first blood

Down, but far from out, the Flash came right back minutes later. Edwards sent a free kick into box, where Mewis headed it past a helpless Alyssa Naeher in the 23rd minute.

The match went into halftime at level terms, but it didn’t stay that way for the duration of the second half.

In the 62nd minute, Lynn Williams went toward the box then sent it central for Edwards, who sent it through to put the hosts ahead. Williams nearly netted another when she beat Naeher off her line, only to watch Julie King clear it off the line.

Leroux put the match out of the Breakers’ grasp for good when she collected a pass from Abby Dahlkemper and sent it past the reach of Naeher to cap the scoring.

The Breakers return to action on Saturday when they meet the Chicago Stars at Toyota Park.
